GENEVA, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- UN Under Secretary-General Cheick Sidi Diarra said on Wednesday the number of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) has doubled in the past 39 years, stressing the need for helping the LDCs to improve productive capacities. The number of LDCs has increased from 24 in 1971, to 49 countries in 2010, with only Boswana, and Cape Verde "graduated" from the list in 1994 and 2007, Diarra said in a press conference held in Geneva, by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). To address the deteriorating situations of the LDCs, the UNCTAD will held the Forth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries in Istambul, Turkey, from May 30 to June 3, 2011. A pre-conference meeting is already underway from Oct. 27 to 29 to generate ideas and momentum for upcoming event. According to the UNCTAD, the LDCs are characterized by extreme poverty (three-year average gross national income per capita of less than 905 U.S. dollars, which must exceed 1,086 dollars to leave the list); by health problems such as high rates of malnutrition; and by economies that are heavily dependent on basic agriculture and export of basic commodities and raw materials.
