Over the years in business, I’ve seen many reflux sufferers amongst our customers find relief by drinking alkalife so I decided to look into this further. Acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is affecting more and more people these days particularly due our diet. I wanted to find out a more scientific reason why alkaline water works so well to improve acid reflux. Here’s what I’ve come up with. The Cause of Acid Reflux Acid reflux is a condition where stomach acid moves backwards into the oesophagus. acid reflux gerdSome of the symptoms are: chest pain feeling pain right after eating a big meal a bitter taste in the mouth hoarseness a sore throat after eating chronic cough wheezing nausea sudden excessive salvia trouble swallowing. Acid reflux is caused by what you put into your body and when. That’s great news because you don’t need drugs to get rid of it! But what we tend to do is reach for over-the-counter medication to find temporary relief at the detriment to our overall health. Many of these drugs are proton-pump inhibitors which inhibit acid secretion. They work on the symptom not the cause and are suspected to cause loss of bone density, heart disease, risk of infection, organ damage, loss of vitamins and minerals and so on. A 2006 study of 135,000 people 50 or older found that those taking high doses of proton-pump inhibitors for longer than one year were 2.6 times more likely to break a hip¹. What we should be doing is eliminating foods that are causing it and swapping them with food and beverages that make it better. According to Dr Jamie Koufman, pepsin is the culprit, not acid. Pepsin is what does most of the oesophageal and throat damage caused by reflux, but pepsin requires acid for its activation. Pepsin is an enzyme released in the stomach to break down food protein into peptides. With reflux, the inflamed tissue has pepsin on it and in it. That’s why acidic foods and beverages cause trouble. How to Alkaline Water Works to Reduce Acid Reflux In a study² conducted by Dr Jamie Koufman and Nikki Johnston PhD they found that alkaline water inactivated pepsin. It was found that pepsin was still activate when a water with a pH of 7.4 was consumed. This study concluded that alkaline water with a pH of 8.8 permanently inactivated the pepsin and therefore consumption may have therapeutic benefits for patients with reflux disease. It was also found that the hydrochloric acid buffering capacity of alkaline water far exceeded that of conventional waters and aided in the absorption of vitamins and minerals. What Some of Our Customers Say.. “I am nearly 38 weeks pregnant and have REAL bad reflux. I drink some alkalife water and it goes away. My 2.5 year old now refuses any other water.” Toni Butylewicz from Glenmore Park NSW. “Dear Sir, I come across Alkalife by pure accident, I am generally a fit person, but suffer from a hiatus hernia, misdiagnosed by doctors for many years. Started as a bad case reflux, because of the wrong diagnoses the condition became worst year by year. I tried Alkalife, I thought water is water, yes we should drink it, at worst it would quench the thirst I had. Within 15 mins the discomfort eased off, I only had approx 250mls from the bottle. In the 3 weeks since coming across Alkalife I have forgot to take my medication on many occasions. Well if there is no discomfort I forget to take the medication. I advised my doctor of the reduction of the medication and he was pleased of the results. Thanks Alkalife for the relief in a bottle. Charlie Coleiro.
