One of the newest areas of medical science to be examined and explored is anti-aging and specifically the inevitable process of oxidative stress. It is the process by which all of us age and ultimately succumb. Oxidative stress is not a disease but simply the rusting of our bodies from the inside out. Even in our mothers womb we are being exposed to free radicals as the blood from which we get our nutrients is full of free radicals from our mothers exposure to oxygen and food. Our body is equipped to naturally combat these free radicals through the production of the enzymes catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD). These enzymes work within our cells to naturally regulate the production of antioxidants which combat and absorb the free radicals. Unfortunately as we continue to age the production of these enzymes decreases and as such so does the up-regulating of our natural antioxidants To help mitigate the loss of natural antioxidants many of us now use antioxidant supplements. Unfortunately many of these supplements are man-made and their side effects may outweigh their benefits. Some of them have been linked to some of the diseases they were designed to help mitigate. If these supplements are natural in origin they are limited to absorbing free radicals on a 1:1 ratio whereas our natural production is over a million to one. The supplement industry is a $90 billion industry and the part catering to antioxidants is over $45 billion. Many are indiscriminately taking these without regard for side effects or whether they are providing the desired result.
