The Sweetest Killer

Health,Fitness,Food & Beverages
I have it out for a particular substance. A substance that goes under the radar ever so sneakily and subtly. A substance that most people have copious amounts of day in, day out, without the slightest idea of how dangerous it truly is.

In a balanced system our brain will send accurate messages through our body, which are delivered via neurotransmitters from the brain. These messages relay information that can tell us many things including whether we are hot or cold, tired, thirsty, hungry and full (and thousands of other things obviously). But what can happen (and does happen) when we eat this particular substance is that these messages start to become delayed, or blocked, basically messed up. This can cause short and severe long-term damage.

This particular substance, in my belief and in full conviction of what I’m about to say, is the number one killer of humans in the world because, if we collate the diseases its plays a major role in or in most cases causes, then you’ll understand why. Heart disease, heart attacks, obesity, type 2 diabetes, auto immune diseases like multiple sclerosis, kidney failure, even things like depression, Alzheimer’s and dementia, and of course CANCER. And that substance is Refined sugar.

White sugar, brown sugar, cane sugar, raw sugar, “organic” sugar. Whatever it may be called – the body recognises this substance as POISON. It has been proven to be a neurotoxin.

The scary thing about refined sugar is that it’s an opiate, which means it is literally a drug. Sugar is the MOST addictive substance in the world. Don’t believe it alters your behavior like other notorious drugs do? Well, give a small child a soft drink and watch him go bezerk. Or what about when you don’t have your sugar “hit” and you become agitated and edgy and will do almost anything to get your hands on it! Not only does it alter your state of mind, but if you decide to eliminate refined sugar from your life, the withdrawal symptoms are no different than that of an illicit drug. Headaches, cravings, I’ve even known people to vomit, get the shakes and even have cold sweats!

Educating people on the dangers of refined sugar is a major priority to me. If you read my first blog post you may be aware that I have a brother who passed away from Liver Cancer last year. He was a non-drinker, a non-smoker, he was incredibly fit and muscular and he looked healthy, however he consumed vast amounts of refined sugar on a daily basis. Refined sugar completely undermined his wellbeing in the most horrific way.

I want to change the way people view refined sugar. We reward children with it, we celebrate with it, and we congratulate people with it. We call it a treat. We need to stop viewing refined sugar as a positive. It is a neurotoxin. Cancer feeds off sugar. SUGAR IS CANCER’S LIFESOURCE.

I always have people say to me, but once in a while isn’t so bad is it? Ok then, let’s rattle off some statistics! 50% of children in Australia are overweight or obese. In the past 10 years, the rate of youth admitted to hospital for heart attacks and strokes has risen by 30%. 1 in 2 people will supposedly be diagnosed with Cancer. So lets get real – are we living in a society that only eats sugar “occasionally”, or “once in a while?” Clearly not.

“BUT SUGAR IS IN EVERYTHING!” I hear that all the time. Refined sugar is poured into packaged and processed foods simply because food companies are completely aware of how addictive it is, however, refined sugar is NOT in whole foods aka REAL FOOD! It isn’t in your grass fed meat and wild caught seafood. It’s not in your freshly made salads or vegetable juices, or your cashews and it certainly isn’t in your alkalife water! If we start eating real foods, then we can avoid the dangers of refined sugar from the get go! Is that chocolate bar really worth it? Do your children deserve to be fed a neurotoxin daily? Do you??

Now before you think I’m a crazy sugar-hating lady, that’s not the case at all (well maybe just a little). We have 4 major taste sensations that make a satisfied pallet – sour, bitter, savoury and sweet. Sweetness is part of the taste spectrum, it’s part of a balanced life, but it’s where we are getting our sweetness from that is the problem. A major problem. Fruit, raw desserts and treats, paleo inspired muffins and cakes – the world of delicious sweetness is there and it is there to be totally enjoyed. Start seeking out these healthier options and start eliminating refined sugar from your life!

Refined sugar is a serious and incredibly dangerous substance and it’s time for it to be exposed for what it truly is and what it truly does to the human body.
