KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 (Xinhua) -- The number of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections was increasing in the last three years in Brunei, a Bruneian daily reported on Friday. While seven HIV infections were reported in the sultanate in 2007, a total of eight and 11 cases were reported in 2008 and 2009 respectively, The Brunei Times quoted a medical officer as saying. According to Ahmad Fakhri Junaidi from the Bruneian Health Services Department, most of the HIV victims in Brunei contracted the infection overseas and then passed on the virus to their wives. From 1986 to 2009, the country reported 56 HIV cases, and the trend was increasing in the last three years. Ahmad Fakhri said that the increasing number of HIV infections was due to the increasing number of sexually transmitted infections in the past six to seven years. He also said that the good surveillance system in the country had also aided the department in picking up a lot more people with HIV.
