GENEVA, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) recommended here on Thursday that the pandemic A/H1N1 virus should be used for making seasonal influenza vaccines in the northern hemisphere. Besides the pandemic A/H1N1 virus, the A/H3N2 virus and the influenza B virus should also be included in making influenza vaccines in the 2010-2011 northern hemisphere influenza season, the UN agency said in a statement. The recommendation was announced following a four-day closed-door meeting of influenza experts, which was meant to select the seasonal flu vaccine strains for the northern hemisphere. Based on the analysis of the experts, "it is expected that A/H1N1 pandemic 2009, A/H3N2 and B viruses will co-circulate in the northern hemisphere 2010-2011 with the likelihood that the pandemic A/H1N1 2009 virus will predominate," the WHO said. According to the agency, between September 2009 and January 2010, influenza was active worldwide, and the predominant circulating virus was pandemic influenza A/H1N1, which first emerged in April last year. So far some 211 countries and overseas territories have reported laboratory confirmed cases, with more than 15,000 deaths.
