A relief valve is a kind of valve that is used to limit or control pressure in a vessel or system that can build up by a fire, instrument or equipment failure or process upset. Working procedures The pressure is basically relieved by allowing pressurized fluid to flow from an auxiliary passage out of a system. It is set or designed to open at a predetermined set pressure in order to protect the pressure vessels as well as other equipment from being subjected to the pressure which exceeds the design limits. When set pressure exceeds, then the relief valve becomes ‘path of least resistance’ as the valve is forced to be open and some portion of the fluid is diverted through the auxiliary route. Diverted fluids (gas, liquid or a mixture of both) are routed through the piping system known as relief header or flare header. Since fluid is diverted, the pressure inside the vessel will surely drop. If it reaches valve’s resting pressure, the valve will close. This blow down is stated as the percentage of the set pressure and it refers to how much pressure requires to be dropped before valve reseats. Blow down is supposed to vary from 2-20%. About relief valve A bypass relief valve is supposed to be used in a system that can help in the pressure relief by returning some fluid which is removed a compressor to pump’s inlet. It helps to protect the pump or compressor along with any other associated equipment. Bypass equipment can be inside of system, built within a part of the pump. On the other hand, it can be used as an external piece of the equipment, basically installed as a part of the fluid path. High pressure is not considered as the only reason for which pressure relief valves are important. Low pressure is also supposed to create a vacuum which is lower than the system will easily be able to take. So it can be said that the valves are used open when pressure reaches low of a level.
