HOUSTON, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Texas, one of the U.S. states, is in urgent need of a federal disaster declaration to help combat raging wildfires across the state, a senior official of the state said on Friday. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, who was acting governor while Texas Governor Rick Perry went on a presidential campaign travel, said at a press conference that he signed another statewide disaster declaration request after his request earlier this week did not get a response from the federal government. A federal disaster declaration will give Texas access to federal resources to help the state respond to wildfires. Firefighters are now battling a massive wildfire in Bastrop County, near Austin, Texas. The fire, the largest in Texas, has scorched more than 34,000 acres, destroyed about 1,400 homes, killed at least two people and forced some 5,000 to flee their homes since the fire started last Sunday. Media reports said on Friday that the Bastrop fire is officially 30 percent contained, but crews had surrounded and closed in on the flames and no new homes were reported destroyed overnight. About 7.2 million acres of grass, scrub and forest have been burned in wildfires across the U.S. so far this year. In Texas alone, wildfires, fanned by dry air, high winds and drought, have destroyed some 3.5 million acres of land. Firefighters are battling more than three dozen fires that are burning in Texas.
