KATHMANDU, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- "We are really grateful to the Chinese government for providing us the vehicles for managing garbage in Kathmandu", Rabin Man Shrestha, chief of Environment Management Division of Kathmandu Metropolitan City told Xinhua on Tuesday. The Chinese government has donated 108 different vehicles worth approximately 1.8 million U.S. dollars on Aug. 27, 2010, for the management of garbage in the Kathmandu Metropolitan City. After that, Chinese engineers had come to Nepal and provided training to Nepali drivers on how to run the vehicles, said Shrestha. From around one and half months the vehicles are in operation in Kathmandu. However, the vehicles are yet to be registered in Nepal which is being delayed due to some insurance policy of Nepal. He said they are running the vehicles with the temporary numberplates and soon all will be registered. Altogether 36 vehicles are in operation now, in which there are 30 Harmetic Garbage Trucks. Six garbage trucks are in operation in Kathmandu Valley. Shrestha said that due to the modern vehicles it has been really very easy to manage the garbage around the Kathmandu Metropolitan city in all 35 wards. He also said that they have reserved other vehicles as around 40 are enough for the garbage collection around the Kathmandu Metropolitan City. "The technology is very new and we have to use it to compare ourselves with other cities in the world," he added. Earlier there used to be tractors, which loaded waste here and there around the city which was very difficult and dirty too. It was hard for people to go near it while it was running on the road, he told Xinhua. However, with these vehicles there is no difficulty in collecting and bringing the waste to the landfill site and also there is less air, visual and sound pollution, he said. Talking to Xinhua, Ratna Man Maharjan, employee of Kathmandu Metropolitan City and driver of one of the Chinese-aided vehicles said that he is feeling very good and easy because of the new vehicle. "I have been working here since last 25 years and I am the witness of the change here", he said. He also said that earlier the vehicles used were not very good as they did not protect them from rain, heat and it was open such that garbage could easily fall on road but now the vehicle has made it is very much easier to collect garbage. Another driver, Ram Bahadur Mijar who has been working for past eight years told Xinhua that there is vast difference in driving the new vehicle than the old tractor. "Now the garbage we have collected do not fall on the road and we can drive without fear that the garbage will fall anytime, easily we can dump it in the landfill," he added.
