River Ganga is the most important water body in India. Noted for its cultural and religious significance, it is considered divine by many sources and has been the seat of temples and worshiping for thousands of years. Unfortunately, the waters of the River Ganges have currently reached serious levels of pollution and many people who bathe or drink water from the river have met with serious illnesses. For this reason, the Government of India has taken on several projects with the sole aim of purifying the waters of Ganga and bringing it back to its original state of cleanliness. The ideal way to purify the waters of this river is by implementing water treatment systems. A water treatment system is a mechanism through which water is purified and made acceptable for general usage. There are different types of processes that are carried out in water treatment plants, including sedimentation, chlorination, disinfection, filtration and coagulation. Various equipments are used to purify water at these plants, which include ozone generators, water filters, screening equipments, oil water separators and sludge treatment equipments. For many years now, the River Ganga has become polluted by sewage wastes, pesticide residues, chemical wastage and toxic residues that come from industrial wastes. These can only be removed by a proper water treatment plan. There are a number of different water treatment plants that are equipped to purify water in a number of ways. A wastewater treatment system can remove physical, chemical, biological and radioactive elements from the water. They are classified into sludge treatment and sewage treatment plants. These systems can offer further integrated cleaning facilities. Other modes of water cleaning that can be used include containerized water treatment plants and ozone based treatment plants. The containerized water treatment plants can help in making large volumes of water pollutant-free through the use of a single unit arrangement. These are particularly useful to carry out large scale environmental cleaning like that of purifying the waters of Ganga. Ozone based treatment plants make use of ozone in order to purify water. Ozone serves as a great disinfectant for different types of microorganisms such as protozoan parasites and Cryptosporidium. Using ozone removes any need to add chemicals in the water. A number of Ganga cleaning projects have been made in the past with limited success. Recent developing in this line aim to implement more advanced solutions to water cleaning of Ganga. The water treatment plant equipments manufactured by Reva Project Engineers, Bangalore; can be used to treat the waste water waters to obtain purified water.
