Oven cleaning can be one of the most tedious of all cleaning tasks. Unless you line your oven with aluminum foil before every use, you’re more than likely to have spillage and crumbs at the bottom. Even self-cleaning ovens can’t get all the charred remains off the sides or the base. That’s when the heavy-duty cleaning comes in. However, homemade oven cleaning solutions can work just as well as store-bought cleaners in tackling tough food residue on the inside of your oven. Read through the following solutions that can be created with items you already have in your pantry! Baking Soda Paste For such a simple solution, this works surprisingly well on tough-to-clean oven messes. Mix one part baking soda with enough water to make a paste, coat your oven and let it sit overnight. Once it hardens, don rubber gloves and use an old spatula to scrape the residue off. If you have a hard time scraping off the caked-on solution, use a wet sponge to loosen it. However, be warned that this can get messy before the cleaned surface is revealed. Salt, Vinegar and Heat Heat your oven to between 125 and 250 degrees. Once warmed, spray the oven surface with water and vinegar and add salt to any caked-on grime. This method seems to require a little elbow grease and may not work for all spills, but adding a little baking soda to the vinegar-and-water solution may be all you need to loosen even the toughest grime and restore your oven to sparkling cleanliness. Soap and Baking Soda This method begins with sprinkling dry baking soda on your oven floor. After letting it sit for a few minutes, take three teaspoons of borax, one-fourth cup of vinegar and one-eighth cup of dish soap and mix it with two cups of hot water in a spray bottle. Spray the solution onto the baking soda and let it sit overnight. Wipe away with a cloth or sponge and use the remaining solution to tackle any tougher spills or stains. Clearly, adding baking soda to your arsenal of home-cleaning supplies is a must when it comes to oven and appliance cleaning. If you suspect your oven isn’t heating to temperature, cooking unevenly or malfunctioning in any way and giving it a through cleaning doesn’t help, consider calling a local professional to check the lines and rule out any electrical issues. However, keeping your oven clean and stain-free is one way to make sure buildup on the oven floor won’t potentially cause a fire or set off your smoke alarms.
