RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Continuous rainfall in southern Brazil has killed one and left 48,000 people homeless for the past few days, local authorities said Friday. In Guabiruba city, Santa Catarina state, a 66-year-old man identified as Valdomiro Carminatti was killed when the roof of his house collapsed on top of him. According to the Civil Defense services of Santa Catarina state, among the 48,000 homeless people, at least 13,000 stayed at public shelters. Some 680,400 people from 71 municipalities had been affected by the rain, while 15 towns have already declared state of emergency due to ensuing floods, said the Civil Defense services. Several state highways are blocked due to flooding or the risk of mudslides. The water level in the Itajai-Acu River rose 12 meters, the highest ever recorded in 20 years. Meanwhile, having no rainfalls for three months, mid-west Brazil is suffering from a severe drought that has caused forest fire, while the states of Goias and Mato Grosso are also on alert for lack of rainfall. Three years ago, Santa Catarina state was devastated by storms which lasted for months and caused 135 deaths.
