Your Best Guide on How to Crate Train a Dog


Having a puppy or dog as a pet has several obligations. One of these obligations is proper crate training. Just like humans, dogs also have shelter we call as crates. This is where they hide in times of danger, rest, and eat. The task involving crate training a puppy is tough. Essential amount of knowledge on how to crate train a puppy is simply what the pet owner requires to flourish in this task.

When crate training, it is important to be informed first about the breed your dog or puppy has. If your dog is originally a small dog breed, then picking a medium-seized crate is a great move. The crate of this size is sufficient for your pet to perform its routine just like sleeping, sitting, standing, and moving around. However, if you raise bigger dogs like American/English Foxhound and Golden/Labrador Retriever, then it would be perfect to pick for larger crates.

You will have to put in the required crate accessories after you have identified the perfect size for your pet's crate. Components such as comfortable crate pads, crate mats, stainless steel cups and pails are just what your pet requires, so you must put them inside the crate. Your selected crate should have a robust foundation and must be simple to use. Moreover, to prevent troubles in locking the dog in or taking him out, ensure that the door is simple to lock.

The second tip on how to crate train a puppy is to get him familiar with the crate. This is to get your pet comfortable to his new home, according to dog experts. Let your dog or puppy spend couple of hours within the crate. If the crate is large enough, then feel free to enter also. Being with the pet during crate training inside the crate will prevent him from getting suspicious about your way of locking or leaving him unattended.

Feed the dog inside the crate; this is the third tip on how to crate train a puppy. Hence, there should be a pail and a stainless steel cup next to his crate where you can put his food and water. Furthermore, let your pet rest inside the crate. In the first couple of days of crate training, your pet would likely cry or whine. This is where firm discipline makes a difference, especially if the dog starts to bark and make disobedient moves. Say ‘no' and make him go back to sleep. Always instill in your mind that as his master, your rules should be followed.

The fourth tip when crate training a puppy is to let your pet crated for couple of minutes when you're at home or heading out. If you are simply in your own home, then try to check him from time to time. If you plan to go out, then remember to be back in less than an hour. Allow him to out of the crate for him to spend time messing around once you got home.

Crate training, although tough, is enjoyable. If you are raising a dog in your own home yet have no idea about how to crate train a puppy, then worry no more for the reason that online world can offer you plenty of video clips that you can always watch.
