How to Light an LED on High Voltage LED lighting is usually identified with low voltage energy efficiency, but LED can also be powered by high voltage. High voltage LEDs are used commercially and provide brilliant light in a multitude of colors. Only properly trained electricians should work with high voltage. Instructions 1 Start lighting an LED with high voltage by ordering the proper LEDs. High voltage LEDs are manufactured with special materials. Common LED elements would not survive input from a high voltage source. 2 Arrange the LEDs in two arrays. The LEDs in one array will be forward biased and energized during the positive half of the AC cycle and the others during the negative half of the AC cycle. Set the energize and de-energize cycle of the two LED arrays to match that of the high voltage current. The Alternating Current (AC) cycle is critical to proper lighting. 4 Wire the receptacles with redundant connections to prevent a short from arcing across the unit and burning out the entire array. Use the heaviest gauge wire possible. 5 Connect the high voltage AC power unit and test the circuits before turning on the electricity. The time to find a bad connection or wiring problem is before high voltage current is sent into the unit.
