Around 30 students and professionals attended this forum. The resource speaker was Mr. Zhou Baofa, Taichi instructor at the Confucius Institute at the Ateneo de Manila University. The talk covered various topics such as food and beverage, Qigong, Taichi, Accupuncture, and Pressure Points. The speaker, Mr. Zhou, is an expert in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Taichi, and has vast experience on Chinese traditional health culture. His speech and deep knowledge of the subject has captured the attention of everyone, de-mystifying the ancient arts, and allowing the audience to appreciate better the Chinese perspective on Health and Wellness. His talk started with a discussion of eating habits, which the audience responded quite enthusiastically because of its close relation to health. A thousand year old saying goes: “Medicine and reflect each other, medicine and diet promote each other.” In the olden days, people discovered the medicinal value in various food items, and took advantage of them to create dishes that prevent and cure certain diseases. He then talked about Qigong, pressure points, and Acupuncture, and used various illustrations to explain how the flow of qi affects health and how qigong and acupuncture promote the proper flow of qi and how acupuncture and manipulation of pressure points can repair irregularities and blockages in the flow. In the last part he demonstrated several moves of taichi, in order to encourage the audience to practice it. Many of them recorded the video so that they can try the moves at home. Mr. Zhou demonstrates several moves of taichi. After the lecture, the audience approached Mr. Zhou to consult him on their various health problems. He keenly examined them, applied acupressure, and advised them on what habits they should practice in order to rehabilitate themselves. This enlightened many of the attendees, and they expressed their pleasure about the practicality of Mr. Zhou’s advise. The Confucius Institute at the Ateneo de Manila University conducts 4 cycles of classes a year, and a forum on Chinese society and culture is organized every cycle. In the first cycle, Economic and Commercial Counselor Wu Zheng Ping of the Chinese Embassy in Manila talked about the Chinese economy 10 years after its entry to the WTO as well as China-Philippines economic relations. These forums provide a good venue to learn more about contemporary China, and, so far, has been received quite a very positive response from the general public.
