U.S. investment managers are most worried about headline risks hitting financial markets, prompting them to see cash and safe-haven Treasurys in a somewhat more favorable light, Russell Investments found in its latest quarterly survey. In a study conducted between late May and early June, 166 U.S. fund managers turned less bullish on risk-sensitive assets like stocks and high-yield bonds. The only two assets that gained in popularity were cash and U.S. Treasurys. The proportion of those bullish on cash grew 11 percentage points to 17%. Those liking U.S. Treasurys, despite their low yields, increased eight percentage points to 12%. While a significant majority still find little value in U.S. government bonds, the increase underscores overhanging concerns about the euro-zone debt crisis. The survey showed 66% saying headline news or event-driven risks as the greatest challenge for active managers today. This was followed by 49% being concerned about regulatory and policy factors. Russell has about $155 billion in assets under management and works with 2,300 institutional clients around the world.
