Five Handy Troubleshooting Tips For Furnace Repair

Business
When your in-home furnace is working, it can be a wonderful thing. There's nothing like coming in out of a cold winter day to a toasty, comfortable home. But when it's not working, things can get very unpleasant. Nobody wants to come in from the chill outside to deal with the chill inside.

Have you ever found yourself in the position of having a malfunctioning heating system? If so, you can relate to the discomfort that comes with it. You probably also know how expensive it can be to call someone to resolve it. But did you know that it is possible to remedy this situation without making that phone call? It certainly is, and here are some handy, do-it-yourself tips for furnace repair that can be nice to your wallet.

Take A Look At Your Thermostat

As surprising as it sounds, a lot of service calls turn out to be false alarms. The thermostat may simply not be on or set properly. Make this the first thing you check when you suspect that your heater is malfunctioning. Make sure that it is set to heat, check for any loose wires, and also see if the battery is in good condition.

Change Filters If Necessary

If you're not getting a lot of warmth, one possible reason is that your filters are dirty. Soiled, clogged filters can reduce the efficiency of your heating system and even cause it to turn off prematurely. Examine the filters and swap them out for new ones if needed.

Look For Leaky Ducts

Perhaps you have the heat on, but some of your rooms are still cold. A possible reason is that there may be gaps in your ducts. Before you get to that, ensure that the room vents are open so that warm air can get to them. Next, check any ducts you can access for gaps or spaces. Use metal duct tape to seal any such gaps, as normal duct tape will wear out quickly.

Clear The Chimney Flue

Another furnace repair check is the exhaust flue. It is very likely that birds and other animals attracted to heat can fall in and block the passage, which can cause problems. First, turn the furnace and thermostat all the way down. Take apart the duct at the spot where it leaves the furnace and clear out any blockage. Finish by carefully reassembling the parts as you found them.

Check For Gas

If your system uses gas, it is possible that someone switched off a gas valve and never reactivated it. You should examine this if your heater is not doing its job. If it employs a pilot light, that is another way to see if there is gas coming through.

If you run this checklist the next time you're stuck in the cold, you may find that your furnace repair issue has a quick and simple fix. Keep this list handy, and you'll be more likely to stay toasty without breaking the bank.
