Bold construction signs on coastal highways, are intended to catch the attention of busy drivers and warn about further road and city center construction. Asphalt grinding and paving on the heavily trafficked highway will run for a while, and the city’s public works department wants to make sure people are well-aware.The funny sayings, posted in large, bright orange letters, are an unexpected twist on the average digital construction signs. The construction company hired said, “We’re trying to get people to pay attention and read the signs”. The city recently finished placing base asphalt down on a coastal highway and 4 blocks of downtown. The city will conduct daytime grinding and nighttime paving to finish resurfacing the road. The construction is part of the city’s Town Center, or Lantern District, renovation project. South Coast Water District is now adding in water and sewer lines between major streets, and the city expects to change the one-way coastal highway to two-way by year end. The orange traffic signs have grown a fan base, and people have been emailing suggestions of their favorite sayings to the city.Sayings include: “This too shall pass,” “Oh there’ll be days like this,” “Mama says are we having fun yet?” and “Papa says listen to mama,” a spokesperson said. The city sent out notices to nearby residents and businesses as a heads-up regarding construction and is maintaining access to all businesses. They encourage residents and visitors to support our businesses during construction. While there are many businesses open and parking in rear signs along the two roads, some shops said they have felt the negative effects of construction. “No one came in today,” said this one storeowner, who offers paddle boarding lessons and rentals at the local beach. “Thursdays are usually very busy for me.”Nearby, business at Ben’s stake house was down by 40 percent”, said Ben, who has owned the store with his wife for more than 16 years. But they are trying to be positive about the eventual Town Center project completion. “We all know they want to beautify the city and I want that more than anything,” Ben said. “I understand what they're doing.” The city is paying for businesses affected by construction to advertise in the papers. But they can’t find everyone unless you call the city hall immediately. These funny constructions sign maybe humorous to read but please do pay attention to the road. Safety first folks.
