Four Tips For Creating a Comfortable Lunchroom in Your Heavy Duty Tent

Business
Whether you're undergoing new construction or renovating an existing space, a heavy duty tent can serve as an ideal temporary lunchroom for your employees. But an interim cafeteria can often look a little utilitarian, so it doesn't always have the most welcoming vibe. With a few basic design and decorating tips, though, your new commissary can become as comfortable as your permanent space.

Use Color

You likely have a budget in place for your temporary lunchroom, so the set-up probably includes inexpensive folding tables and chairs or benches that can seem a little drab. To give the inside of the heavy duty tent a more attractive look, use color to decorate. Instead of the usual gray, black, or white, choose tables and seating in your company's colors or other shades that brighten up the cafeteria. You could also use colorful vinyl runner mats to line the floor between the tables to liven up the space and create clear lanes for moving through the room.

Maximize Space

If you have a large number of employees, you want your temporary lunchroom to be able to hold everyone, but placing the tables too close to one another can make it feel cramped and make navigating the area more difficult. When you're creating the layout for your interim cafeteria, have the measurements of the tent and your table and seating options handy so you know how much space you have to work with. You can place several long tables side-by-side to fit as much seating as possible, but be sure to leave space between the rows so employees can comfortably get in and out of their seats. It's also a good idea to create at least one large aisle in the center of the commissary to improve traffic flow through the room.

Vary Seating Options

When possible, it often helps to vary the seating options in your heavy duty tent, especially if your construction project means you've lost your break room and conference spaces in addition to the regular cafeteria. Long, rectangular tables are the most common option for a cafeteria, but consider including a few round tables where employees can hold lunch meetings or other informal work-related gatherings. You can also line a few individual chairs along one of the walls, so workers can sit for a quick cup of coffee or snack on a break.

Make It Personal

A temporary commissary often has an impersonal feel that can be off-putting for employees. Make it more comfortable by including personal touches. Add a moveable bulletin board or chalkboard so you can post work-related information and activity bulletins or employees can share fliers about items for sale or similar information. You can also create a collage of photos from office events and get-togethers for workers to enjoy. Personalize the cafeteria further by hanging inspirational posters or banners on the walls -- even an American or state flag can help make it feel a bit more like home.
