COTABATO, Philippines, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Government security forces rescued on Monday night a seven-year-old girl seized by militants in the restive southern Philippines, the military said on Tuesday. Keshia Jel Navarro, a first grade student, was abandoned around 8:00 p.m Monday by his captors in remote village of Pikit township in the province of Cotabato, said ground military commander Lt. Col. Benjie Hao. The victim was abducted by two men shortly before 1:00 p.m. by two armed men from the hands of her mother, Elsie Navarro, a public school teacher. "Local officials saw the incident and pursued the kidnappers but lost them in nearby village," he said. "They abandoned their captive from their safe house," he added. In the city of Cagayan de Oro, gunmen are still holding a businessman and his son they seized. Manny Boniao was taken at gunpoint along with his son while they were inside their shop. No groups claimed responsibility for the latest incident of kidnappings but the military blamed extremist group Abu Sayyaf in previous abduction. The Abu Sayyaf, active in southern Philippines, was founded in the 1990s and has perpetrated kidnapping, bombing and beheading.
