What Is The 35th Annual Minority Business Opportunity Day? SCMBDC (Southern California Minority Business Development Council) is an organization that unites businesses with one another for networking and outreach purposes. Whether it's foreign, private, public, large or small, businesses of all kinds meet. SCMBDC represents the interests of over 600,000 minority owned business establishments throughout 13-counties in Southern California. The organization provides state acknowledged accreditation to minority-owned enterprises, as well as business networking between registered firms, corporate skill development, and valuable strategic marketing information. Located in Los Angeles with over 37 different councils, the organization has made a significant impact on the minority enterprise community since it was established slightly over 40 years ago. Minority Business opportunity day began in 1969 and was hosted in the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. The goal was to introduce government and corporate purchasing staff to minority owned businesses that could offer services and goods to their communities. Soon afterwards, it evolved to into an annual business expo, attracting more and more minority and corporate enterprises. In 1975, the Minority Enterprise Coalition and the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce formed a public nonprofit organization named the Southern California Regional Purchasing Councils, which was SCMBDC's predecessor. The SCMBDC's 35th Annual Minority Business Opportunity Day was one the biggest business convention workshops of its kind in the western United States. It offered entrepreneurs a chance to work with corporate business representatives, meet financial experts from big companies, as well as attend a business strategy and networking workshop. Registration The registration fee for the 35th Annual Minority Business Opportunity Day was $25. This included access to workshops, business exhibitions, continental breakfast, personal appointments with representatives from various corporations, and designated parking. Registration could be paid online through the SCMBDC website or onsite at the event location itself. The 35th Annual Minority Business Opportunity Day took place on February 24th 2011 at the Pacific Palms Hotel and Conference Center in the city of Industry. The business expo was open from 11 am to 5 pm. In Attendance The 35th Annual Minority Business Opportunity Day featured a group discussion panel on how minority owned businesses could get in the door with car manufacturers. The panel comprised of; the purchasing supplier coordinator of Nissan, Daniel Boren; corporate outreach, diversity and manager of Hyundai, Colon James; Vice President, Toyota, USA. Charles Harmon, and IW Group CEO and Chairman, Bill Imada, who also doubled as the event's moderator. Mr. Gerry Fernandez, President and founder of the Hospitality Alliance and Multicultural Foodservice, (a nonprofit company advocating for the inclusion of diversity in the hospitality and food service industry) was the main keynote speaker at the 35th Annual Minority Business Opportunity Day. At the event over 400 business buyers, purchasing staff, and corporate representatives met with business owners, entrepreneurs, and investors and offered critical information about how to get your foot in the door with their business organizations. There were personal appointments where minority businessmen and women had the chance to meet with various business consultants and representatives from major companies. These appointments were held between 3 to 5 pm, and were specifically organized to match minority owned suppliers and businesses with access to corporate business consultants and experts familiar with their specific industry.
