Your plumbing system is always working nonstop behind the scene, but it’s doing its job silently that you wouldn’t notice it until the drain shows signs of clogging. What’s unfortunate though is when this kind of incident happens just when you are expecting guests. The last thing you need is for them to see just how messed up your home is, especially when the sink starts backing up and releasing such foul smell. Since not a day goes by when you don’t use your kitchen sink or lavatory, it’s best to have your drain repaired right away. A good plumbing company would be able to help you with things like this one. If you’re curious about how drain cleaners work and how effective they really are, you can ask experienced plumbers about them too. Commercial drain cleaners are useful in certain circumstances. Since they are heavily advertised, it’s understandable why you might want to quickly resort to using these cleaners to unclog your drain. However, you should know that there are other options that may be as effective as these commercial cleaners without the same expensive price or hazards. There are three major types of drain cleaning products that are often used by homeowners and even by plumbing companies like us. These products include the following: • Oxidizing drain cleaners. These products are usually made up of peroxides, household bleach, and nitrates. They work by getting rid of the electrons in the organic material of whatever it is that is clogging your drain, thus oxidizing that material. Oxidizing cleaners are denser than water, which enables them to go beyond standing water. They are also effective in clearing the clog by releasing gas and heat. • Caustic drain cleaners. Two of the main ingredients of these products are caustic potash and lye. These are bases that add electrons to the materials blocking the drain. They also contain hydroxide ions that clear the drain. The basic chemicals give off heat and dissolve grease into a more dissolvable substance. Just like the oxidizing cleaners, caustic drain cleaners can push past standing water. • Acid drain cleaners. These are often available only to plumbers like us, unlike the easily available oxidizing and caustic products. They are made up of high levels of hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid, which fuel the presence of hydronium ions and gather more electrons off the material blocking your drain. The material and the hydronium ions react when combined, giving off heat and melting grease in the process. If you have noticed, all these drain cleaners release heat. If they are not used properly, they may damage the PVC pipes, which are the most common pipes used today. It is important that you know how to use the drain cleaners as instructed. Use them only in well-ventilated areas. Make sure to wear safe rubber gloves to protect your skin from the chemicals. Store them in a place far from your children’s or pets’ reach. Another risk associated with chemical drain cleaners is that they can burn the skin, eyes, mucous membranes, and even clothing. They are also combustible because they give off noxious fumes. This is why it is not advisable to mix drain cleaners or to use a plunger on your drain when you have already poured drain cleaners into the pipes. Drain cleaners usually have a waiting time of at least 15 minutes. Afterwards, you would need to flush them with hot water. You can repeat the process of using drain cleaners and pouring hot water into the pipes until the clog is removed. Our company also provides emergency plumbing services in NYC along with commercial & residential plumbing solutions.
