The Most Common Foot Problems Seen by Podiatrists

Health

Diseases of the foot can be painful and significantly interfere with an individual's life. Seeking the care of a podiatrist if you suspect a foot problem is very important. You can find out more information about podiatrists in your area by accessing websites like www.midwestfootandankleclinic.com.

There are many common ailments that may affect an individual's feet. One of the most common problems that podiatrists see is "athlete's foot" and other fungal and bacterial conditions. Conditions involving fungus and bacteria on the feet are common due to the fact that our feet spend a lot of time in shoes. Shoes are a prime location for bacteria to grow, as they provide a dark, warm, and moist environment. The symptoms of fungal and bacterial infections include dry skin, redness, blisters, itching, and peeling. If any of the symptoms are present, it is very important to see a physician as soon as possible so that the infection can be treated promptly. If a fungal or bacterial infection on the foot isn't treated quickly, it may be difficult to cure. To prevent infections, doctors suggest that people use a foot powder if their feet are particularly sweaty. Washing socks after every use is also suggested. If the condition fails to heal after 2 weeks, seeing a doctor is necessary.

Dry skin without the presence of fungus or bacteria is also a common, yet irritating, foot problem. Washing the feet with a mild soap every day and applying a moisturizer may ease discomfort and help with the healing process. Corns and calluses are a buildup of dead, thick skin that form when there is too much friction on the bony parts of the feet and toes. Corns are generally found on the top and bottom of the foot, while calluses can form anywhere that friction is present. Corns and calluses may be uncomfortable; however, individuals should avoid attempting to remove them themselves. Certain products containing acids that will break down the dead skin exist and are available over the counter. For those with diabetes or poor circulation, seeing a doctor for assistance in breaking down the corns and calluses is essential. Over-the-counter products also exist for warts, another common problem affecting the feet; however, these products rarely cure warts. In a doctor's office, a physician may freeze, burn, or remove the warts successfully.

Ingrown toenails are a painful foot condition that lead many people to surgery. This happens when a piece of nail breaks the skin. Ingrown toenails can be avoided by cutting the toenails properly. If an ingrown toenail is seen by a doctor promptly, the nail can be removed; however, if too much time passes without treatment, the nail can grow to deeply into the skin and it will require surgery to remove. Ingrown toenails can also occur after a professional pedicure where unsterile implements are used and the toenails are cut improperly. If you are getting a professional pedicure, be sure to bring your own cuticle clippers as well as toenail clippers to the appointment. Only go to reputable businesses for pedicures and manicures.

If you suspect any of these common foot problems, accessing a website like www.midwestfootandankleclinic.com for more information and making an appointment with a podiatrist may be necessary.
