Many types of pulses and cereals are available in African food stores. Pulses and cereals have a good nutritive value. Cereals are a type of grass and they are a member of the monocot family. They are a big source of vitamins, carbohydrates, fats, proteins and oils.


The variations of cereals available are as follows:

Rice is mostly found in tropical and temperate regions. It is one of the major food of Brazil, some parts of Latin America, Portuguese, some parts of Africa and Asia. Rice is a huge source of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, fiber, sugar, calcium, iron and sodium.

Maize is a main food for Americans, Africans and most of the world. Maize is also grown for different uses apart from human consumption. A hundred grams of maize contains eighty six calories and are the huge source of B vitamins, thiamin, niacin and folate. They are also a good source of dietary fiber, magnesium and phosphorous. Maize is also used as Biofuel.

Wheat mainly grows in temperate regions. It is the food which is accepted worldwide. Wheat is the main source of vegetable protein all over the world. Many food items are made from wheat such as bread, biscuits, Cookies, cakes, pasta, noodles, beer, and other alcoholic beverages. It is also used as biofuel. It is the main source of vitamins, minerals, proteins, starch, calcium, iron, magnesium, vitamin C, and thiamin.

Barley is a widely cultivated cereal grain. It is eaten in most parts of Europe. It is also used as an animal fodder. It is used as fermentable material such as beer and many distilled products. Barley has lots of commercial importance. It is grown in summer as a tropical regions. It is used as animal feed, fish feed, alcoholic beverages, nonalcoholic beverages and it is also used as food items as it contains essential amino acids.

Sorghum is one of the main staple food in Africa and Asia. The uses of sorghum are diverse. It is used as food, fodder and alcoholic beverage production. It contains carbohydrates, fats, proteins, fiber, calcium, vitamin C, potassium and vitamin K1.

Sorghum contains 70% starch, so is a nice energy source. Its starch consists of 70 to 80% amylopectin, a branched-chain polymer of glucose, and 20 to 30%amylose, a straight-chain polymer.

Oats are grown in temperate climates. There are several food items prepared from oats such as oat cakes, oatmeal cookies, oat bread and many more.

Fonio it is mostly grown in West Africa. There are two types of fonio, white and black.

African food stores have a wide variety of cereals and consumers can get nutritive food items in these shops.
Leon Grant has performed a series of interview with the shop owner of online shop and has found out that African food stores in Australia has provided a wide variety of products to the Australian market.
