Hi guys! For this blog post I wanna speak on the powerfully intimate and reciprocal link between play, meditation and creativity. The very nature of child like wonder, stillness and creative acts are strongly linked. The marriage of these three elements is something that has been and continues to be an all encompassing way of life in what ever I may be doing, whether it’s reading a voice over, singing a song, driving my car or preparing oatmeal for breakfast. So what is creativity to me? The ability to adapt, alter or change a condition(s) in order to achieve a new and higher level of realisation. Fundamental to the process of creativity is a marriage of rational and imaginative ways of perceiving, which is at its most powerful effect when rational thinking alone can give way to a calmer, more relaxed way of understanding which can then fuel the thought process and allow greater insights to ignite and give imaginative energy to the moment. At the ground level of creativity is a sense of calm, a stillness, a poised state of ease or mindfulness, which is a word I don’t like because the mind isn’t full at all its slowly being emptied of thought thru inner awareness, breath and bodily awareness, but that’s for another blog. Then what arises is this sense of what I can only describe as joy, excitement, good cheer and fun that is simultaneously focused. So for me creativity is not so much a way of doing, but a way of ‘allowing’ higher thought, insight intuition and understand to come ‘through’ us. I believe wholeheartedly that we are all born with, greatness and genius inside of us, it’s our birthright. In fact it’s part of our higher human capacities. Social conditioning stifles our natural impulse to be present, to be playful in our thinking and thus imaginative in our actions. Still, isn’t it funny how this same childlike sense of wonder, curiosity and adventure is seen as the cornerstone of finding your passion and purpose in later life. I love watching kids especially toddlers. I love how they can be absolutely absorbed with something and allow their entire being to completely be at one with it. I remember with great amusement watching my daughter Jorja stare at a piece of broccoli. She would be full of indifference and impatience in her high chair ready to receive her food and as I would hand her a piece of broccoli it’s as if her whole world stopped and all that existed was that piece of broccoli. She would gaze at it, slowly turning it. She would bring it closer to her face and then slowly pull it away. Fully fascinated and fully present constructing her story of that broccoli for her own creative amusement and wonder. What would instantly result from her oneness with the piece of broccoli was a sense of play, of fun, of joy having taken her journey of discovery with this superfood. I start each day with a 30 minute meditation have done for about 27 years now. However, over the last year or so after each morning meditation I practice a few minutes of fire breathes. Breathing through my nose, bring the breath up to the top of my head exhaling through my nose just down to the point above my belly button, then exhaling/inhaling rapidly and deeply for about 1 minute and doing this 4 times. The energy that moves through my entire body is AMAZING! It’s like being tickled from the inside out, many times I will burst out with uncontrollable laughter it’s so strong, It puts me in such a state that I literally create my entire day from this state. Now, not everything during the day goes exactly to plan and when the journey goes off centre I trust it more and more as synchronicities, providence, and meaningful good fortune. I’m convinced that if we can cultivate a sense of stillness and calm present moment awareness through meditation or any other consistent practice, we will over time return to and incorporate much more effortless play and wonder in our life experiences ironically become more productive. We’ll think more clearly and creatively. Be far more adventurous in our decisions and actions. Hand in hand with this new found way of relating to life we will attract to us circumstances, situations people and particulars that will lead us to expressing our self more fully, boldly and creatively. We are all always creating, otherwise we wouldn’t exist. Most of the time we do it subconsciously by default. All choice is not creative, most times it’s habitual. But with greater stillness and a trusting sense of play, awe and wonder, we can deliberately create more and more from the authentic best version of who we are. wayne mcdanielWayne “Mac” McDaniel is passionate about health & well being.
