An injured black sea animal was spotted floating up and down off a beach in Xiamen Tuesday afternoon A group of swimmers approached the wounded animal A wounded black sea animal was spotted close to shore off Xiamen Tuesday afternoon floating up and down in the sea before painfully swimming away from the crowd of spectators in the direction of Kinmen, according to Wednesday’s Xiamen Daily. The dolphin-shaped animal made its appearance in the water off a beach near the Huandao Road “One country, Two systems" signboard at around two o’clock in the afternoon. Visitors said the animal looked feeble as it bobbed up and down being pushed towards the beach by the waves. Xiao Shen and four of his friends swam towards the animal when it was close to the beach. Shen said he was thrown down by the animal when he seized its tail and tried to ride on its back. The scared animal then submerged and swam away from the beach. "I touched a cigarette box-sized satellite tracking device on the dorsal fin of the animal when I tried to ride on him,” said Shen, “The animal is more than two meters long, and it seems to have suffered severe injury as I felt it was very weak.” A fishery patrol boat tried to search for the injured animal in the waters close to the shore after that, but in vain. Miao Xing, an expert of the Third Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration, said the animal could be a false killer whale, and the photo showed there was a bowl-sized wound on its back, which seemed to have become inflamed and could result in the whale’s death. Miao said he hoped whoever installed the satellite tracking device on the whale could contact them by calling at 968820 and help them to locate the whale before it’s too late. False killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens) is a cetacean, and the third largest member of the oceanic dolphin family (Delphinidae). It lives in temperate and tropical waters throughout the world. As its name implies, the false killer whale shares characteristics, such as appearance, with the more widely known Orca (killer whale). Like the orca, the false killer whale attacks and kills other cetaceans. However, the two dolphin species are not closely related. The false killer whale has not been extensively studied in the wild; much of the data about it has been derived by examining stranded animals.
