Shopping for a new vehicle is an exciting, sometimes frustrating experience. Because most people do business with car dealerships, they often feel overmatched when it comes time to negotiate. Dealers are, after all, professional negotiators whose job it is to make as much money as possible on each and every transaction. How then can you beat a seasoned pro at his own game? Here are a five tips that should serve you well on your next car shopping expedition.

1. Know What You Want

One of the most common reasons shoppers have an unpleasant car buying experience is that they don't know what they want before they visit car dealerships. As a result, the salesmen may think they have an open invitation to show them automobiles they aren't interesting in -- especially ones that are out of their price range. That is why you should always know the make and model of vehicle you want to take home before you start shopping.

2. Don't Get Emotional

A good salesman can read his customers like a book. He can tell from their body language, facial expressions, and comments whether they are interested in a vehicle or not. He will then use this knowledge to negotiate for a better price when he believes the buyer is overly attached to an automobile. As the customer, you want to play your cards tight to the vest. Never say that you "love" a particular vehicle or that you "have to have it." Instead, point out both positive and negative aspects of each model the salesmen shows you. This will keep him guessing about what you truly like and why.

3. Know The Price

Depending on the dealer, most sellers ask for 10 to 20 percent more than they pay for their vehicles. These profit margins help them pay their employees and cover the overhead costs at their car dealerships. But on an product as expensive as an automobile, the difference between 10 and 20 percent can be several thousand dollars. It is up to you as the customer to do your research and know exactly how much the dealer paid for the vehicle. You can then add 10 percent to that number to come up with the best price you are likely to get.

4. Be Nice

As they often say, you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. One of the main reasons people have such a negative view of car salesmen is that they are consistently treated with suspicion and distrust. As a result, they tend to get defensive when speaking to customers they perceive as hostile. But if you flip the script and are respectful and polite, odds are they will return the favor. This should make negotiations run more smoothly. It may also help you get a slightly better price from a seller who wants to do right by you. 5. Be Confident

Even though they have the home field advantage, it is important to remember that you have the upper hand. As a shopper in the Internet Age, you have countless options from which to choose. Most dealers are well aware of this fact and, consequently, do their best to make deals with serious buyers. So don't threatened to walk out every five minutes if the bargaining process breaks down. Simply take a deep breath and remember that you are in charge!
