April 22nd marks the 45th annual World Earth Day, a full 24hrs for people across the globe to show their commitment to environmental protection and to encourage others to continue caring for our world. As a health and wellbeing company, Essex Cares understands the importance of not only looking after our customers but ensuring the environment surrounding them is also being taken care of. Three of our Wellbeing & Activity Hubs are situated in beautiful grounds, tended by our Work Based Training teams who ensure that the gardens are in bloom all year round. Spreading beauty into the local community, Greenacre Garden Centre at Newport House, Sandon, grows a variety of plants that are then sold at their plant sales held throughout the spring and summer. Keep an eye out on the Essex Cares website for upcoming events. However the gardens go beyond their aesthetics and also serve a practical purpose, with all three growing delicious seasonal vegetables. October sees the locals of Braintree flocking to buy their soon to be carved pumpkins from the team at Roundwood Garden Centre. The homely café at Roundwood makes the most of their allotments, using the produce as the base of delicious wholesome meals, keeping their grounds healthy as well as their customers. The Barleytwist Gardening team at Ashleigh Wellbeing & Activity Centre, Basildon, have truly made the most of their quiet haven nestled behind the busy centre. The garden is full of life with a newly developed ‘Bug Garden’, encouraging the creepy crawlies to roam the garden. Bird tables have been built by staff and customers to coax wildlife into the suburban jungle. Last week, the guys from the Barleytwist team had the opportunity to show off their green-fingered skills at their event for National Gardening Week. The event was a ‘blooming’ success with attendees including Peter May, Chairman of Canvey Town Council and Councillors John Anderson and Doreen Anderson, to celebrate the hard work and seed-sewing skills of the customers.
