Let’s face it, times have changed. Not all marketing strategies work as well as they once did and it is important to focus your efforts on those that are going to be effective. Here are a few marketing techniques that have shown to be less than effective and not really worth the effort. Too Much Information “While many feel that providing the potential customers with constant information and too much of it is the best way to get them to finally see what you have to offer, in most cases this just turns them off and sends them looking for the unsubscribe link,” said the owner of a landscaping business, Dean Bjorkstrand. “Make sure that you are providing the potential customers with information that they find useful and not hitting them over the head with excess text. They will appreciate it and listen to what you have to say when you send information their way.” Friends and Family “While it would be silly to simply skip over friends and family when you are marketing your business, especially on social media, you don’t want to attack them with pleas for help when it comes to promoting your business,” said HVAC business spokesperson, Barb Trebesch. “Small nudges and simple information is best. Don’t be pushy with them and try to guilt them into helping you spread the word. This is a waste of your time and theirs.” Emailing Everyone You Know “While it is important that you let those you know find out what you are up to, you may want to avoid sending mass emails to everyone on the planet every time your business changes or you get a new product,” said Tyler Hicks, marketing manager for National Salon Beauty Supplies. “Stick to a schedule of releases and only email those that you feel would have an interest or that have expressed a desire to be on your mailing list. Sending an email every other day about what’s happening is only going to become annoying and is a waste of your efforts. Be selective.”
