It is amazing how many companion or domestic dogs are actually hunting dogs hounds . A hound is basically a specific dog type that helps hunters who serious about securing their game. These dogs track and chase their prey, they are not just retrievers. Hounds are not the same as gun dogs, they don’t help the hunter locate the prey or recover it after it has been shot, and instead hounds track, chase and kill the prey (if the hunter instructs them to do so). Some hounds just corner the prey or "tree" the prey until the hunter arrives. These dogs are known for their athletic body, stamina and agility. They are broadly classified into 3 groups, which include – Scent Hounds, Sight Hounds and Spitz Hounds. Hound dogs are one of the oldest hunting dog breeds in the world. Scent hounds can have certain health issues which hunters need to be aware of. Their wrinkly (loose) skin and long ears can be prone to infections, so in order to keep your scent hound healthy, you should see to it that your buddy is cleaned on a weekly basis. Cleaning any more often can dry out the skin and cause other issues such as scratching. Sight hounds need lots of exercise to stay healthy; they are prone to bloating (deep chest cavities can cause issues with undigested grain dog food pellets expanding and causing blockages that can be fatal). These dog can also be quite sensitive to anesthesia. Spitz hounds were bred to hunt, so they tend to chase anything, so keep your dog safe and keep an eye on your four legged companion all the time.
