Five Tips For Incoming High School Freshmen

Business
The end of eighth grade is nearing, and you're not sure if you'll see all your friends and classmates again. A few may be moving to a different high school than yours, perhaps a Catholic or private school. Maybe they're staying in the same district, but that's not your primary concern. You're thinking about how you're going to make it through your first year as a freshman. Yes, you're excited, but a little scared. From here on out you're a teenager, and every step you take will count until you reach college. We've all been there. Here are some basic tips to keep in mind that every freshman can use to help their first year run as smooth as possible.

Go To Orientation

Every incoming freshman is invited to participate in an orientation tour of their new high school. Sometimes it's even required during your last year of junior high. Try not to miss these dates. They're important events and will help make your transition an easy one. Orientation gives you a feel of what kind of environment to expect by showing you where your classes are and their coordination. It also grants you the opportunity to meet students and make friends. You'll also meet your prospective teachers if you already have your class schedule. This way, on your first day as a freshman you're not bombarded and confused with the unknown.

School Supplies

A class schedule will be mailed out to you at least a month before you begin freshman year. Get ready to hit the store and purchase all the supplies required for the materials list. That's not to say your teachers won't add anything else to the list after your first day, but preparation is always key. Remember that you'll constantly be going to buy other school supplies throughout the year as projects, lessons, and homework change.

First Day of High School

You never want to miss the first day of class. Consider it a free day where you get the time to re-meet all your teachers, classmates and become used to the rhythm and routine. The first day can be tricky. You may forget where to go and where your classes are. Keep your schedule with you. Also carry a map of your school and a notecard with your locker combination on it. If you memorized your combination over the summer, then you're ahead of the game.

Homework Is Harder

After the second or third day, the fun will be over, and you'll start getting into serious work. Every high schooler can tell you that the homework is harder than it was in middle school. Plan to be on your best behavior and hand in your work on time. Teachers are tougher because they want you grow and get accustomed to the "real world." As a freshman, you will take on more responsibility. As long as you do the work, follow the lessons, take the time to study and turn work in on time, you will be fine.

Join Activities

Find an interest or hobby and go for it. Join a sports team like soccer, football or basketball. If you're not into athletics, there are tons of after school clubs you can join for computers, astrology or art. Taking the leap to participate in extracurricular activities will not only unlock everlasting relationships you can benefit from but will help boost your resume when it comes time to apply for college.
