The Regional Transportation agency for Southern Nevada has recently begun researching how pedestrians move and the danger spots in Downtown Las Vegas in an effort to prepare for the remaking of the area as denser residential and pedestrian friendly commercial applications move into the area. The additional research has been spurred by the stunning rise in Las Vegas pedestrian accidents over the last few years. Las Vegas pedestrian accidents happen due to the way Las Vegas was created. The city of Las Vegas was built not in the 16th century, where pedestrians and horse draw carriages were the norm but instead, Las Vegas got started as a major city in the 1940s and 1950s, the heydey of the American automobile. Going into early March, there were 10 Las Vegas pedestrian fatalities. This rate is 150% over the pedestrian fatality rate in 2014. In 2013, there were 9 pedestrian deaths by the start of March. Last year, just over 20% of traffic fatalities were Las Vegas pedestrian deaths. The cities that had more pedestrian deaths than Las Vegas were New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, Miami, San Diego, Tampa and Detroit. The only city in the top 10 list that had a smaller percentage of Las Vegas pedestrian accidents was Baltimore, whose rate was just tenth of a percent lower that the rate of Las Vegas pedestrian accidents. In Las Vegas pedestrian accidents, the people who are most likely to die are the elderly. As we age, bones become more brittle and organs begin to deteriorate. Muscle mass also falls as we age, so when the elderly are in a Las Vegas pedestrian accident they are particularly prone to suffering serious injury.
