Italy declared a national day of mourning on Monday for the victims of the recent earthquakes that hit northern-central Emilia Romagna region. The earthquakes which occurred on May 20 and May 29 killed 24 people and injuring hundreds of others. The funerals of three of the victims, including a parish priest who was killed as he was trying to carry out a small statue out of his church, were held in the morning in the city of Modena, near the center of the quakes. As the ground continued to shake for hundreds of times in the past days, another magnitude-5.1 quake hit the same area on Sunday evening sparking panic, but causing no casualties. According to local experts, the recent seismic activity may continue for months, or even years. The quakes have left at least 16,000 people displaced, and seriously damaged the local historic and cultural heritage, besides causing an estimated economic loss of billions euros. "This long seismic sequence has caused a state of prostration among local citizens, as every time they begin to project a recovery, another quake occurs destroying their hope," Nora Marzi, who is responsible for local psychological services, told Sky television channel.
