Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, the president of the UN General Assembly (GA), on Thursday called on UN member states to support the good offices of Kofi Annan, the joint special envoy of the Arab League and the UN for Syria, in order to put an early end to the 16-month crisis in the Middle East country. Al-Nasser made the call while addressing the General Assembly during a plenary meeting on the latest situation in Syria. "I urge all member states to unite in cooperating with the joint special envoy and to impress upon the government and all parties (in Syria) the need for a cessation of violence in all its forms, and for a rapid and peaceful solution to end this crisis," said Al-Nasser. Also speaking at the General Assembly session, special envoy Annan said that his six-point peace plan, widely backed by the international community and also accepted by the Syrian government, "is not implemented" yet. The plan, put forth nearly two months ago, failed to halt violence in Syria, said Annan, adding that violence can not be allowed as part of ordinary life in Syria. The six-point plan calls for the withdrawal of heavy weapons and troops from population centers, a daily halt in fighting for the delivery of humanitarian aid and treatment for the wounded, as well as talks between the government and the opposition. Al-Nasser said that the General Assembly meeting came at a " tragic moment" for the people of Syria. "On 25 and 26 of May, atrocities were committed in the region of El-Houleh, and yesterday in Al-Qoubeir, west of Hama," he noted. "Dozens of men, women and children under the age of 10 were killed, and hundreds were wounded." The GA president condemned the crimes committed in these cities in the "strongest possible terms." "Such crimes require a transparent, independent, and impartial international investigation," he said. "Those responsible must be held accountable." Al-Nasser stressed that the international community must find a way to end the violence and the humanitarian crisis in Syria, and to facilitate a resolution that is Syrian-led, inclusive and peaceful. "We need to have a frank and results-oriented discussion on Syria," he said. "Time is pressing. The lives of tens of thousands of Syrians, and the stability of the region, are at stake. The credibility of this organization is also at stake.".
