Compiled by Pari Syal Photography: Ewout Huibers for concrete & zoku The new generation of business travellers like to mix work and play. Zoku by architectural firm concrete is a novel solution to the emerging set of next-gen demands... The first Zoku will open in Amsterdam in Q4 of 2015. Bookings open in July’15. With 133 rooms or Zoku Lofts, each spanning 2 sizes – 5.1m x 5.1m and 3.6m x 7.2m – the focus of the typical hotel room shifts from the sleeping area to the work area, where a working table for four takes centrestage. A room at Zoku is much more than just a hotel room. It is a spacious micro-apartment. Incorporating all functions and needs of the global nomad in an intelligent interior module that enhances the sense of spaciousness and functionality, each Zoku Loft is a stylish mix of open space and pull-out furniture units. The focus is on optimum space management. Zoku, which is Japanese for family, tribe, or clan is projected as a home-office hybrid with the services of a hotel and the social buzz of a thriving neighbourhood. Encouraging social connections, Zoku will offer diverse social areas to facilitate effortless interaction between Zoku’s residents and the local community. 24/7, open-plan communal living and co-working spaces will allow for conversations and small meetings, and a residential living kitchen will present the possibility to share a meal together or host small dinner parties. Minimizing the waste of space, resources and time, and promulgating an efficacious working environment, Zoku proposes to unlock new opportunities in the hotel industry, marking the end of the hotel room as we know it!
