In the acting profession, varicose veins are quite common especially among those actors and actresses who dance. There are other reasons that some of those in the performing arts have insured their legs or other body parts. Betty Grable insured her legs because she felt that they were her trademark, and Fred Astaire's box office appeal depended upon his legs and his ability to dance his way through a movie. Astaire was one of the first to insure his legs. The insurance policy was for $75,000, which at that time was a great deal of money. Fred Astaire began his dancing career with his sister Adele, but would eventually find himself paired with Ginger Rodgers. It was due to the Astaire-Rodgers dance team that Fred's fame blossomed as did the need to insure his legs. He also insured his arms for another $20,000. Betty Grable's insurance policy was talked about more because of the amount for which her legs were insured. One million dollars in the 1940s was like the billion-dollar policy of Mariah Carey today. Betty was the pinup girl whose beauty, physique, and legs entertained the boys in the military during WWII. It's doubtful that the men fighting Hitler would have noticed varicose veins in Ms. Grable's legs, as she had a million dollar smile to accompany her beautiful legs. Jamie Lee Curtis, daughter of Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis, carries a $2-million policy on her legs. Tina Turner and David Beckham also carry policies. Tina and Jamie Lee's policies are not nearly the dollar amount as that of Mr. Beckham. Tina's policy at $3.2 million seems meager compared to Beckham's $70 million policy. Mr. Beckham, however, cannot sing so it is logical that his reliance on his legs during a soccer game would require the higher policy. One of the more interesting policies owned by a performer is the $600,000 insurance on Dolly Parton breasts. No one can deny that it was an important decision, as Ms. Parton's breasts are an established factor in her career and the reason for her policy. While those actors, actresses, singers, and sports figures chose to insure their legs and body parts, there are others who have run the gamut and lost. The number of women in the U S who have varicose veins ranges between 40 to 50%. Many of them are well-known names in the entertainment industry. Sarah Jessica Parker and Kristen Davis of Sex in the City both have had their share of problems with varicose veins, as well as Emma Thompson, who has been very honest about having had her legs undergo treatment.
