Aboard the orbiting International Space Station on Monday, the Expedition 32 crew enjoyed a partial off-duty day after Sundayâ??s Expedition 31 landing. Flight Engineer Joe Acaba conducted a communication test for the Synchronized Position, Hold, Engage and Reorient Experimental Satellites, or SPHERES, experiment. SPHERES uses three bowling-ball-sized satellites to test techniques that could lead to advancements in automated dockings, satellite servicing, spacecraft assembly and emergency repairs. The Soyuz TMA-03M spacecraft is seen as it lands with Expedition 31 Commander Oleg Kononenko of Russia and Flight Engineers Don Pettit of NASA and Andre Kuipers of the European Space Agency in a remote area near the town of Zhezkazgan, Kazakhstan, on Sunday, July 1, 2012. Flight Engineer Sergei Revin worked with the Seiner experiment. This is a Russian experiment that examines the oceans below, documents their characteristics and then correlates that to certain bioproductive areas that impact the fishing industry. After more than six months aboard the station, Expedition 31 Commander Oleg Kononenko and Flight Engineers Don Pettit and Andre Kuipers landed in the steppe of Kazakhstan aboard their Soyuz TMA-03M spacecraft at 4:14 a.m. EDT Sunday (2:14 p.m. local time). The departure of Kononenko, Pettit and Kuipers from the complex marked the end of Expedition 31 and the start of Expedition 32 under the command of Padalka, who will remain on the station with Revin and Acaba until Sept. 17. Three additional Expedition 32 flight engineers, NASA astronaut Suni Williams, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Aki Hoshide and Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko, are set to launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan in their Soyuz TMA-05M spacecraft July 14 and dock to the station on July 17. The trio flew from the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Russia, to the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan Monday to begin two weeks of pre-launch preparations.
