How To Enjoy a Public Wine Tasting

Business
With the arrival of summer, a surplus of wine tasting events spring up around the country. Whether it's at your local grocery store, a music festival, or a vineyard, warmer months just seem to pair with enjoying a nice glass of vino. Wine tasting events are designed to allow participants to try several types of wine at the same time, compare, and choose their favorites. They also offer you a chance to discuss with fellow enthusiasts and even make some new friends. These events are not always prestigious. They can, in fact, be quite casual. As fun as it sounds to make friends and drink some vino, there are a few things you should do before arriving at these events.

1. Eat something.

Even though food pairings are sometimes offered, they're only sample sizes and are not intended as a full meal. Their primary purpose is for you to get ideas for your own pairings. It's important that you eat a more substantial meal so your body can absorb the alcohol without getting overly intoxicating.

2. Stay away from heavy aromas.

In other words, if you truly want to taste the wines, you should stay clear of smoking, heavy perfumes, and after-shave lotions. Don't wear or anything that might affect your sense of taste and smell. This includes chewing gum and foods heavy with garlic.

3. Dress carefully.

If you're going to be outside, wear something comfortable and cool. This might not be the best time to pull out your favorite pair of heels. Wearing white is also dangerous, as no matter how careful you are with your glass, there's nothing to stop the guy behind from spilling all over you.

4. Stay hydrated.

Wine tasting will usually have water available. If you're at a festival, however, you'll want to make sure to carry your own. Even if you don't feel like you're getting dehydrated, play it safe by drinking just as much water as wine.

5. Be courteous.

Move away from your table after you've received your pour. There is almost always a long line of people waiting behind you, and you don't want to block the flow of traffic. You can always get back in line for another sample or to ask questions.

6. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

This is your chance to speak with the winemaker or someone else that knows a lot about the wine they're pouring. If you have a question about the wine you just drank, simply get back in line and wait to get a chance to ask it.

7. Ask about specials.

A lot of the time, grocery stores will offer special prices on the bottle they're pouring. At festivals, six bottle and twelve bottle discounts may apply. It never hurts to ask, and you may find yourself talking your way into a bargain.

Most importantly, remember that a wine tasting is about exploring your palate, experience new flavors, and above all, enjoying yourself!
