Public defenders in Las Vegas and the rest of Nevada were mildly against the bill since they didn’t see how the fiscal implications of the increased sentences were listed in the bill draft. In fact, the bill didn’t include a fiscal note from the Nevada Legislative Council. The public defenders even noted that it would be difficult to see how the additional penalties could impact prison populations, since accurate numbers from the Nevada prison system have not been released in years. Thus, forecasts for the the impact of the bill and even forecasts for the base prison population for the State of Nevada were not available. |
