Public defenders in Las Vegas and the rest of Nevada were mildly against the bill since they didn’t see how the fiscal implications of the increased sentences were listed in the bill draft. In fact, the bill didn’t include a fiscal note from the Nevada Legislative Council. The public defenders even noted that it would be difficult to see how the additional penalties could impact prison populations, since accurate numbers from the Nevada prison system have not been released in years. Thus, forecasts for the the impact of the bill and even forecasts for the base prison population for the State of Nevada were not available. A Las Vegas DUI accident hit and run accident happened last weekend that ended with 8 cars hit, a Henderson man in jail and a tourist from Los Angeles in critical condition at a local hospital. The man in the accident, 33 year old Zakee Bunting, only received minor injuries. The accident happened on E. Naples Dr. near S. Paradise Rd. early Saturday morning, around 2 a.m. Mr. Bunting first hit a Jeep Cherokee when he attempted to turn left from Napes Drive onto Paradise Road. After hitting the Jeep, Mr. Bunting and his Explorer hit a Scion XB being used as a taxi, then hitting the tourist from Los Angeles, Keith Drynan. Mr. Drynan is 31 years old. Continuing to careen, Mr. Bunting’s Ford Explorer then slammed into a Mercedes. Next, four parked cars were hit, two Volkswagens, a Toyota Camry and a Ford Mustang. After hitting the 8 vehicles and the pedestrian, Mr. Bunting fled from the scene on foot. He was followed by a witness to the accidents and eventually turned over to police. If Mr. Bunting had been in this accident in October 2015, he would have potentially only faced a 15 year sentence, assuming he had been able to get free from witnesses.
