sharing play is when children are not necessarily sharing toys with each other, but are able to play alongside one another with little conflict. Actively sharing toys and playing with each other is called interactive play. Moving from one to the other is a big social milestone, but not an easy one if children do not wish to share. There are things that parents can do to encourage their children to get along and share toys with one another. • Model the behaviour When children are young, they may benefit from a little role playing on how to share. Using blocks, take turns building a structure together, adding one block at a time. • Set some special toys aside Allow your children to have a few toys that are special and are not required to share. Explain to children that these are the toys that belong only to them. • Purchase toys that lend themselves well to sharing Toy cars, doll houses and dolls are toys that all lend themselves well to interactive play. Children are able to pick out their own special car or doll, and use several others to share and play together with. In the case of doll houses, children can play together with dolls in the various rooms of the doll house. If sharing becomes a problem, each doll may need to go to a different room or part of the house. • Notice and reward good behaviour When you notice that your children are sharing toys and getting along, pay them with a compliment or a special treat. Positive reinforcement will encourage good behaviour in the future. • Set a timer Sometimes there are not enough toys to go around, but everyone wants a turn. In these cases, let the timer be the bad guy. When children are taking turns on set the timer, and when the timer goes off, it is the next child's turn. As parents, we enjoy when our children can get along and share their toys. But the act of sharing between siblings is not always an easy thing to accomplish. Consistency on the part of the parent is essential when trying to encourage positive play and sharing. Modelling the behaviours you wish to see, making allowances for special toys, encouraging play with toys that are easy to share and rewarding positive actions are all appropriate ways parents can promote sharing and getting along between siblings.
