Weighing the children on Lixia, a solar term marking the beginning of summer in May, is a tradition for Chinese. Nanjing Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum will open on June 9 and visitors can take a tour covering all the 90 relic projects and enjoy the shows in future. The museum is built inside the Former Residence of Gan Xi, known as the Grand Courtyard of the Gan Clan, which is currently the largest and best-preserved private residence in Nanjing. Originally built during the reign of Emperor Jiaqing in the Qing Dynasty (AD 1522-1566), the affluent family’s residence is also known as the three major scenic spots of Ming and Qing dynasties in Nanjing, together with the Mausoleum of Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang and the city wall of the first Ming dynasty capital. In recent years, more and more inheritors of intangible cultural heritage, such as Baiju, a Nanjing local quyi or balladry, paper cutting and Ronghua, flower-like decoration made from silk velvet, opened their studios or performance stages there. The folk custom and culture of old Nanjing is fully demonstrated through words, photos, videos, models and special scenes in the museum. “Visitors not only have the opportunity to enjoy the splendor of each intangible cultural heritage item but also can learn from the masters themselves and participate in it,” said Ma Lin, director of documentary research division of the museum. He also said the final products that visitors made can be brought home for collection. The museum will be free for visitors on June 9. Starting from June 10, visitors need to pay 20 yuan for a one-day visit into the museum.
