Window cleaning can be fun at times and frustrating at others depending on the house and day. Every house is different which is one thing I like about cleaning windows, your job is always changing just a little. Yet at the same time there is consistency in the cleaning of the windows. Unlike many other jobs, in window cleaning there is no requirement to constantly be learning the latest technology. In many work places, employees are often required to do continual training and schooling to stay relative with their industry. In window cleaning you can learn the basics and then decide for yourself if you want to take it further. Once you have the basics down, you can work on perfecting your technique, which is where the consistency comes in. There is nothing more frustrating then learning the basics of your job only to have it change and then you have to relearn your job. This is a process that seems to happen on a regular basis with some jobs. As soon as you learn the system they create a new one. Being in a constantly changing job role is frustrating because you can never get down to business and perfect your skills; instead you are in a constant state of limbo. In window cleaning you learn the basics, if you want to expand into other methods of window cleaning or learn other services that compliment your business; it's up to you, there is no constant training! The other nice thing about window cleaning is that every location is different with their own sets of challenges, which ads a nice variety to your job. Another aspect of variety is that you are both inside and outside, working at both residential and commercial buildings if you so choose. One thing I like a lot about window cleaning is that you get to be outside. It's fun to be outside, feeling the cool breeze and hearing the birds chirping. It's real laid back, unless you're in a hurry to clean a lot of houses or buildings, but that too is up to you. I like to time myself but other than that I'm in no hurry. Of course it can get hot as well, but the freedom of working outside while most of the world is slaving away in some dark cubical makes it worth it. As hard as physical labor can be, there is a satisfaction that comes from it. You can really feel the work you have performed and know you have made a difference for your clientèle. It gives you a feeling of purpose, not to mention some great pay in half the time most people work. Of course there are trade offs, being your own boss means you cant slack, if you want to make money you have to go out their and find it. If you don't motivate yourself to go find work and then perform your window cleaner services, then you won't have any money coming in. It can be scary at times and intimidating, but the pay off is that you are truly free, you answer to no one. You go where you want, when you want and you don't have to ask for permission. There is nothing worse then being at a job that only gives you a few sick days and vacation days. You have to get permission to use them and what's worse is if you use all your days for doctors visits then you never get days off. Being a window cleaner and your own boss allows you to take any day off whenever you want or need to. I got sick awhile back and was out for two months. Afterward I just picked back up where I left off. At most other jobs you would probably be let go. Of course having this flexibility means you have to be conservative and responsible. You have to save money for the slow times or the sick times and you don't have the employer benefits. Hopefully however you can get to making 70-100K a year quickly so that you can offer yourself your own benefits. For me window cleaning means freedom, it's the best feeling in the world even if it's a heavy price to pay for. It's not easy work and I usually come home dirty and wet. Sometimes the house you are cleaning has some really tough challenges. The landscaping is in the way of the windows and you have to climb through bushes and trees. Maybe there is some hilly terrain that is slick and muddy. There are those people who haven't cleaned their windows in three plus years and they expect you to make the windows look like new. The true reality of window cleaning is that it can be easy some days and ruff on others, but just remember you don't have to go back ever again if you don't want to, you are free to choose.
