Paris Lost in A Dream in Red Mansions, 600-year-old Kunqu Opera Appeared in France [Source]the Confucius Institute at University of Poitiers[Time]2012-07-13 18:06:58 What kind of cultural and artistic exchanges will they spark when Paris, France – the capital of culture and art and also capital of romance and fashion, Chinese Kunqu Opera – a magnificent opera listed as “Masterpiece of the oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” by the United Nations Educations, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO), and A Dream in Red Mansions, - a classic literature most well-known in China’s literature history encounter through the veil of time? At a time when China-France Year of Language was moved forward, the Confucius Institute at the University of Poitiers was invited to co-organize Kunqu Opera A Dream in Red Mansions promotion at Wagram Hall, Paris on June 19, 2012. This event included Kunqu Opera exhibition, interaction at the make-up backstage, Kunqu Opera performance and the premiere of Kunqu Opera Film A Dream in Red Mansions. Mr. Abhimanyu Singh, Director of UNESCO Office Beijing, Mukalla, Chinese Liaison Officer of Division of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO, Minister-counselor Lv Jun of the Cultural Office of Chinese Embassy in France, Wang Haiping, Vice Chairman of Beijing Association for External Cultural Exchange, Lv Xianfu, Deputy Director-General of Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture, Li Aiqing, Chairman of Beijing State-owned Assets Management Co., Ltd., Yang Fengyi, Director of The Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre, Ling Jinyu, Secretary of The Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre, Song Hong, Deputy General Manager of Beijing BeiAo Group Film Corp., Ltd., Gong Yingtian, Director of Kunqu art film A Dream in Red Mansions, and nearly 400 social celebrities and teachers and students of the institute gathered together to appreciate the visual and audio feast. Mr. Abhimanyu Singh, Director of UNESCO Office Beijing, and his wife visiting the Kunqu Opera Exhibition Kunqu Opera Exhibition Site Kunqu opera is the most time-honored opera among existing 300-plus operas in China. With a history of more than 600 years, Kunqu Opera is dubbed as “the ancestor of all Chinese traditional operas”. The novel A Dream in Red Mansions produced by Chinese writer Cao Xueqin has been circulated for more than two centuries and is a classic work famous worldwide. Through this event, The Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre brought China’s traditional drama and culture to France and the wider Europe, enabling the westerners to appreciate the beauty of China’s opera and the wonderfulness of Chinese culture.
