Indian Dresses for Festive Occasions

Fashion & Cosmetics

Indian culture is not really ‘one’ culture; it is actually an amalgamation of many different traditions, languages and communities, each of which has their own way of living life. This amazing diversity is most visible when you look at the immense variety of options in Indian ethnic wear for festivals. There are numerous festivals in India, and even in the case of one festival like Dussehra, the types of Indian outfits worn will differ according to the region where it is worn. These are some of the most popular varieties Indian dresses for festivals:

  1. Ghagra Choli
This regional variation of the lehenga choli is one of the most popular and commonly worn Indian dresses in various festivals across India. From the colorful Dandiya and Navaratri celebrations in Gujarat to the exuberant ceremonies in Rajasthan, you will find the ghagra choli and all its regional varieties being worn at lot of different festivals. Typically, the voluminous circular cut ghagras (skirts) are in vogue and they come with intricate mirror and patch work designs. These look wonderful when worn by dancers that twirl and move gracefully all night long at Dandiya (a type of dance) celebrations during the Navaratri period. It is also worn in certain parts of north India for other festivals like Diwali, and in south India, young girls wear it during Onam.
  2. Traditional Sarees
The classic, graceful sari outfit is the traditional option for festive wear. There are many varieties of sarees depending on the festival in question. For Bengali festivals, for instance, women are expected to don the classic white saris with red borders, called the Garad or Korai saris. For certain other festivals, the beautifully decorated Baluchari saris are in demand. In Tamil Nadu, the colorful Mysore silk sarees are the norm for festivals while in Rajasthan, the bandhej (tie and dye) varieties would be the vogue. In Indian wear, nothing can beat the elegance and beauty of the sari and it is the perfect choice for most festivals.
  3. Formal Salwar Kameez
The attraction of the salwar kameez lies in the comfort it offers. Nowadays, you can find plenty of beautiful, formal varieties, which are apt for festivals. Beautiful brocades, hand block printed fabrics, tied and dyed textiles and ikat materials are now used to craft elegant salwar kameez and traditional sarees. In states like Punjab, traditional varieties like Phulkari work salwar suits have been worn for festivals for many centuries.

The advent of technology and globalization has now made it extremely easy for anyone to buy clothes online from Indiaa, even the most traditional types. While this has proved to be an excellent boost for the local handloom and textile industries of India, the question of authenticity still remains for people buying from abroad. To avoid any substandard purchases, people should always buy only from trusted ethnic fashion retailers who are known to provide authentic, high quality items at cost effective prices.
