Creative Upholstery Cleaning Experience in Handling Dog Off Smell

Home Improvement,Health,Family & Parenting
The furniture that looks oh, so comfy to you is just as inviting to your dog. If you opt to allow the dog to rest on the furniture, regular cleaning helps keep your sofa or chair smelling its best. Placing a blanket on the sofa just for your furry friend, after you've cleaned, also helps keep the odor contained and off the upholstery.

Sitting down to relax and being overcome by stinky pet odor can ruin your night. It's even worse if you have company over. If the odor is due to your smelly pet snuggling on the sofa, you'll need to find her a new place to sleep. If an accident is to blame, there's hope for your couch.

Over time, that four-legged lounging on the couch results in upholstery that smells like the dog, or even worse. Just let the smell out not the dog, it is indeed possible.

Vacuum It

If the less-than-fresh furniture has removable cushions, take the cushions outdoors and smack them to remove loose dander, dust and fur. Vacuum the area beneath sofa cushions, where debris tends to accumulate, using the upholstery brush attachment and the crevice tool for those hard-to-reach areas. Vacuum the cushions, chair or sofa arms and legs -- virtually every upholstered area. If the furniture is easy to flip on its side, vacuum the underside as well, because loose fur may accumulate on uncovered springs or webbing, adding to the odor problem.

Baking Soda Fresh Start

Baking soda, sometimes used as a means to deodorize your refrigerator, also helps rid furniture of funky dog odors. Sprinkle baking soda liberally over all upholstered surfaces that smell: sofa and chair cushions, arms and back, and even a bed mattress. Allow the baking soda to sit overnight -- all day in the case of a mattress -- then vacuum the powder away.

Rather than mask the bad scent with a chemical spray, it's best to eliminate it instead. One method you can try is sprinkling baking soda over the smelly area and allowing it to rest on the fabric for an hour or two before vacuuming it up. The baking soda will lift the odor out of the fabric, leaving it fresh and clean. Alternatively, mix equal parts vodka or rubbing alcohol and water in a spray bottle and spray it evenly over the fabric. Blot the excess moisture up with a cloth or paper towel and allow it to air-dry.

Roll It Out

A lint roller used daily over upholstered furniture helps remove fur and dander that contribute to odor. A lint roller contains a roll of sticky paper that picks up any loose, lightweight substances on fabric. Some even have extra-sticky rolls meant just for pet hair. If you don't have a lint roller, packing tape, wrapped sticky side out around your fingers, works in much the same upholstery cleaning way.

Use an odor neutralizer. If this may not work, there are pros who can make it happen.
