Some people in the workplace are looking for a substitution for the term “soft skills.” According to most business people, the term does not have the “word strength” it should have. The general consensus is that the term does not sound like a strong business term. A survey taken a few years ago by the Research group i4cp revealed the following: • Respondents asked to label such skills…the most common answer was "competencies" 58%, followed by "skills" 22% and "values" 11% • 73% refer to them as in a longer term: "critical skills required for business success." • 81% of respondents in higher-performing companies say better companies tend to teach more of these skills regardless of the terminology in use. So over the last few years, I have been creating an on-going list of other terms used in lieu of “soft skills”. By August on 2015 my list had grown to an amazing total of 63 terms. So here they are (in alphabetical order): 1. 21st Century Skills 2. Business Interpersonal Skills 3. Business Readiness 4. Business Ready 5. Business Skills 6. Business Soft Skills 7. Business Traits 8. Career Fast Track Skills 9. Career Readiness 10. Career Ready 11. Career Success Skills, 12. Career Traits 13. Character Skills 14. Character Strength 15. Life & Career Skills 31. Life Ready 32. Life Skills 33. Mindfulness 34. Non-Cogitative Skills 35. People Skills 36. Personal Attributes 37. Personal Business Attributes 38. Personality Business Traits 39. Personality Traits 40. Promotion Readiness Skills 41. Skills For Success 42. Skills to Keep a Job 43. Social Cognition 44. Success Skills 45. Social-Emotional Skills 46. Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) 47. Soft Skills 48. Work Readiness 49. Work Ready 50. Worker Readiness 51. Workforce Attributes 52. Workforce Behavior 53. Workplace Skills 62. Your First Job Skills 63. Upskilling I have used Google Alerts to keep track of this terminology list for “soft skills.” In 2013 the terms, Soft Skills and Job Readiness seemed to be the most prevalent. In 2014 Career Ready / Career Readiness seemed to be used by bloggers and editors in most articles. Although the 2015 Trending term in 2015 appears to be is a new term called “Upskilling,” most people, organizations and publications are now calling “soft skills” either Job Readiness or Career Readiness. Jim Stedt is a partner at The Business SoftSkills Company (GetSoftSkillsNow.Com) located in Santa Ana, California. They provide job readiness and workforce success videos for education, business, prisons and individual use. Training is available online, on DVD, or through an affiliate program. These products are the most complete and concise soft skills training packages now available for the price of an average college textbook.
