Five Tips to Ensure Your Framing Fits Your Feng Shui

No room is complete without art hanging on the walls. However, choosing the proper frame can be a challenge. Keep this advice in mind, and you will be able to hone in on the perfect frame in no time.

Cohesive and Complimentary

Framing choices should be made based on two factors: the theme of the artwork in the frame, and the general décor of the room in which the art and frame are being placed. Deciding on a theme can be difficult, but your first step should be to analyze the current space for furniture pieces or other room accents that really stand out. Or, if your room already has a distinct and particular style, stick with it for the frame.

Here is an example. Let's say you are a big fan of Victorian furniture, and you have just found a classic portrait of Dorian Gray. Everything seems to be cohesive here. The frame you choose for the portrait should be ornate and mathematically exact, probably with a hint of gold to pull everything together.

Conversely, it is important to decide if your style is made to match. But how does that work?

Variety and Cacophony

Some styles, especially postmodern and Dada, are designed to purposefully clash. This brings out a bolder statement: a rebellious defiance to the traditional notions of harmonious art.

Take a look around your space. Does each piece of furniture have a totally different style? Do you have a beautiful new leather couch positioned next to a plaid chair recently purchased from the local thrift shop? Perhaps you should stick to this trend and pick a framing option that boldly stands out. By forcing this jarring look, you are actually creating a symphonic style that is completely unique to you.

Bold or Barely Visible

Now that you have decided on a theme or anti-theme, it is important to determine whether you want this piece of art to stand out dramatically or simply blend into the rest of the room and flow naturally.

If you are framing a piece in the bathroom, for example, you might want to make it bold. Or perhaps you want your sunroom's new, subtle piece to blend in and create a sense of tranquility. Pick a casual, simple frame for a soft and quiet ambiance.

Inspiration from Elsewhere

At this point, you should have a good idea of what you want your motif to be. Research your chosen theme to see which other trends people have chosen. This part is pretty simple; go with your gut. You will be happier if you see something you like, and then find a close match in the framing store.

Value and Vindication

A final piece of advice to keep in mind when deciding on a framing option is the monetary value of the artwork itself. You'll want to get something that matches the piece without overspending. If you invest greatly on a pricey piece of art, then you will probably want to pick a frame that accentuates its beauty with a price tag to match.
