Cockpit Night Vision Lighting. Night Vision Goggles (NVG) provide an stunning capability for the pilot/observer to "look" outside the aircraft at night. This vision makes it possible for a pilot to fly closer to terrain and perform safe landings and takeoffs along with supply covert surveillance. The NVGs are sensitive to infra-red (IR) light which comes from the stars & moon. The IR light reflects off the terrain and is "observed" by the NVG's. Cockpit lighting enables a pilot to see his instruments & radios at night. Cockpit lighting, in spite of this, emits for the most part infra-red light itself for the reason that it is frequently incandescent. Incandescent lighting emits more than 90% of its power in the IR range that the NVG are sensitive to. Result, the NVGs are blinded by enormous quantities of IR present in the cockpit since they are designed to pick up small quantities of IR at a distance.
