A good martial arts training program will not only train you to be fit and agile – it will also train you to be more aware of your surroundings, and be more confident to be able to take control in dangerous situations.
However, with the dozens of martial arts styles (and hundreds of schools) out there, how do you know which style is right for you?
To best decide this, you will need to take a moment and figure out what your specific goals to training are.
For simply fitness, most arts will do. Being proficient in most arts requires sound mind AND body! Therefore, with the practice of each style’s particular movements, there is usually a fitness part attached to it.
The real question comes up when it comes to HOW do you want to defend yourself?
- Judo & Jiu-Jitsu focus on taking your opponent to the ground and groundfighting - Tae Kwon Do focuses more on utilizing kicks as your mechanism of defense - The Soft Arts (many of the Chinese-Based Arts & Aikido) utilize soft, circular movements to subdue and beat their opponent - The Hard Arts (eg. Kyokushin, Shotokan, etc.) utilize hard, linear strikes to subdue and beat their opponent
Our studio teaches a Kempo-based self-defense system which is a hybrid of all of the above systems. Our goal is to teach you self-defense techniques from all of the major martial arts philosophies, and help you (the student) find out which one resonates the most.
Aside from finding the art that you best think fits your personality, the next factor (which may be even more important) is finding an instructor and a training culture that you feel most comfortable with. To become good at any of the martial art disciplines requires years of steady practice, and the only way to do that successfully is to find a good mentor and support staff to aid in that journey.
