Reasons Why Home Care Makes More Sense Than an Institution

Health
Just because your loved ones are getting older does not automatically mean that you have to send them to a nursing facility. Instead, many seniors are able to continue living in their own homes with some assistance. Here are some reasons to consider home care instead of an institution.

Familiar Surroundings

"Aging in place," which is another way of describing in-home care, allows your loved one to remain in a place that is familiar. They know all their neighbors. They know the layout of the house. They know exactly how to work the appliances.

In an institution, the surroundings would be foreign to them. If they had access to appliances, such as they may in an assisted living facility, they would not automatically know how to work them, which could lead to accidents. They would not be familiar with the layout of the room or apartment, which could also lead to falls or bumps if they got up in the middle of the night. Most importantly, they would not have their social connections to neighbors and religious communities.

For seniors who are dealing with cognitive issues, such as the early phase of dementia, this could adversely affect their quality of life. Instead of using the items around them to combat this debilitating disease, they would be in an unfamiliar setting with nothing to help them hold on to the memories that are already fading.

Health and Healing

Nursing facilities and hospitals are breeding grounds for infections. It is common for patients battling one illness to contract a secondary infection due to their surroundings. At home, your loved ones are not exposed to antibiotic-resistant bacteria that could cause secondary infections.

Many seniors actually heal quicker at home. This could be because they are more comfortable and less stressed than they would be in an institution.

Personalized Treatment

Unlike in a nursing facility or hospital, home care patients get treatment and assistance tailored to their needs. Whether it is help around the house, running errands, or even meal preparation, your loved ones will get what they need from their caregiver. Medical facilities perform the same services for everyone and not necessarily in the manner in which they need.

Avoid Institutionalization

Nursing facilities are great for those who need round the clock medical care, but not for someone who is still independent but needs a little help around the house. If the only thing your loved ones need is some help doing chores or getting from one place to another, there is no reason to subject them to an institutional life. New technology also allows those who are in greater need of medical assistance to be eligible for "aging in place" supervision. This allows them to avoid institutionalization as well.

Cost

When considering institutions, you may notice how expensive they are. The cost of having a provider come into the residence is a fraction of the cost of a nursing facility. The average for having someone come to your loved one is between $4,560 per month. This price is dependent on the provider's hourly rate. The average cost for a private room in a nursing home is $6,150. A semi-private room averages around $5,430 a month.

No one likes to be dependent on another person. Having the independence to live on their own is important to your loved ones. If they are in need of help or are recovering from an illness or injury, home care may be your best choice.
